Suriya Sivakumar aka Suriya is one of the most prominent stars of Tamil Cinema. Born on 23 July 1975. And so far throughout his acting career, since his debut in 1997 with “Nerruku Ner”, Suriya has given a number of wonderful performances that made him one of the Best Actors of South Indian Cinema. Suriya is always known for giving outstanding performances on screen. He has always entertained the masses with different and unique avatars that he portrays in his various movies. Here in SobiGhor, Today we will discuss top ten best movies of Suriya Sivakumar aka Suriya.

 

1. Mounam Pesiyadhe

Mounam Pesiyadhe, Released in 2002 is a romantic drama film, written and directed by Ameer Sultan. This was the debut movie of Amir Sultan as the Director. With Suriya movie stars Trisha Krishnan in lead roles.  This is also the debut movie of Trisha Krishnan. we also see other newcomers like Nandha, Neha Pendse and choreographer-turned-actor Anju Mahendra in supporting roles in the movie. A movie that tells you the story about everyone’s preferences and opinions about love and marriage. Where we see Gautham played by Suriya and Kannan played by Nandha are friends, where Kannan is in love with Mahaa played by Neha Pendse. Whereas Gautham is not interested in love, rather he wills to marry the person his parent’s chooses. But Kannan’s parents arrange Kannan’s marriage with Sandhya played by Trisha Krishnan. Now Kanan wants to inform his parents and Sandhya about his love, so he sends Gautham as the informer. And Gautham founds that even Sandhya is not interested in love rather she also wills to marry the person her family chooses. We see a blushing smile in Gautham’s face, and as the movie goes ahead Gautham and Sandhya falls in love. A movie full of romance and drama will always keep you engaged with the brilliant performances by star cast and wonderful music in the background. The soothing music of the movie was composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. A movie by a maximum of the artists as a newcomer turned out to be a Hit at the box office. And was appreciated by everyone for this artist’s hard work for making the movie so brilliant on the screen. It was later remade in Telugu as Aadanthe Ado Type (2003).

 

2. Kaakha Kaakha

Kaakha Kaakha, released in 2003 is another action drama starring Suriya. The film was written and directed by Gautham Menon. Starring Jyothika and Jeevan in lead roles with Suriya. The movie is about Anbuselvam played by Suriya, an honest, daring IPS office who is also the Assistant Commissioner of Police of Chennai. As he has no relations in life, he lives with no fear. He works with a ruthless special unit of police officers who are fighting against crime in Chennai. Anbuselvam is brave and lives with no fear. Until, he meets Maya a school teacher played by Jyothika, with whom Anbulselvam falls in love. He also gets married to her, but then we see day after his wedding some goons attacks Anbulselvam’s house abducts Maya and throws Anbuselvam out of his house, the scene is also seen at the beginning of the movie. Jeevan portrays the leading antagonist of the movie, who was appreciated for his performance. The music of the movie is composed by Harris Jayaraj and cinematography by R. D. Rajasekhar. The film was a big hit upon release and all the artists were appreciated for their specific hard work. The movie was later remade in dubbed in many languages. The Bollywood movie “Force” starring John Abraham and Genelia D’soza is a remake of Khakha Khaka.

 

3. Nandha

Nandha, released in 2001 is a drama written and directed by Bala, Starring Laila, Rajkiran, Saravanan and Rajshree with Suriya in prime roles. The story of the movie is about a young man who returns from a juvenile jail to his family and society that he had left years ago. The movie explains to fight for love and life, a fight to earn mother’s love and a struggle to live the second chance that the leading character has got. Throughout the movie, we see Nanda portayed by suriya, who went to Juvenile prison for murdering his father, who used to physically abuse his mother. After returning from Juvenile, his mother doesn’t want to accept him. The struggle to get mothers love in the movie will make you go in tears. Watch this movie to feel the love for mother, with heart touching score at the background. The music was composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja which will keep you engage with his heart touching music throughout the movie. The film did average business at the time of release but is mentioned as one of the best performances by suriya. Laila the lead actress of the movie was awarded as Best Actress Filmfare South for her performance and R Rathnavelu as Best Cinematographer. The film was later remade and dubbed in many languages.

 

4. Ghajini

Well, Amir Khan starrer Ghajini released in 2008 was a big blockbuster at the box office. But the original story starring Suriya is never less. The original movie itself inspired and adapted by Christopher Nolan’s Memento, Ghajini was released in 2005 in Tamil. It is a psychological thriller genre movie directed by A. R. Murugadoss and was produced by Salem Chandrasekharan under the banner of Sri Saravanaa Creations. With Suriya, this movie stars Asin, Nayantara and Pradeep Rawat in lead roles. The movie explores the life of a rich businessman portrayed by Suriya who develops anterograde amnesia after a violent encounter with few goons unknown to him, also in this encounter his girlfriends is killed. He tries to avenge the death of his girlfriend, and the process to find out these unknown goons is one of the most amazing parts of the movie. A short-term memory of just 15 minutes that is accumulated together with help of an Instant camera photographs and permanent tattoos on his body, to catch the ultimate antagonist. The concept is really a lot unique that Indian cinema has never witnessed. Harris Jayaraj composed the music of the movie. It was later dubbed and released in Telugu and both the versions were critically and commercially acclaimed. The unique plot of the movie is considered as one of the key reasons for this movie becoming such a big hit. It was later remade into a Hindi film by Murugadoss again in 2008, starring Aamir Khan with Asin in lead roles.

 

5. Ayan

Ayan translated into English as Creator. Released in 2009 is an action movie co-written and directed by K. V. Anand. With Suriya in lead this movie features, Prabhu Ganesan, Tamannaah Bhatia and Akashdeep Saighal in pivotal roles. The movie was produced by M. Saravanan and M. S. Guhan. The film’s story speaks about deva portrayed by Suriya, a youngster whose mother wants him to become a government official. But, he works for a smuggling group run by Arumuga Dass portrayed by Prabhu Ganesan, who has been his mentor and was also looking after him since Deva’s childhood. Problems arise when Deva’s rival, Kamalesh begins opposing Dass and also tries to eliminate Arumuga Dass from the business of Smuggling. And so the movie goes on. Throughout the movie, we see enough action with love, sacrifice, and betrayal till the end of the movie. A wholesome entertaining movie where Suriya’s passionate performance as a con is really fantastic. Watch this movie for having a lovely entertaining experience. The music of the movie was composed by Harris Jayaraj. Ayan was declared as the only blockbuster of the year in Kollywood, collecting about ₹80 crore worldwide. It was later also dubbed and released in Telugu as Veedokkade, which was also a box office success in Andhra Pradesh and Kerela.

 

6. Singam

Singam released in 2010, is the first movie of the Singam Trilogy. Singam is an action masala film directed by Hari. The movie stars Suriya, Prakash Raj and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles. The film was produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja in association with Reliance Big Pictures. The movie is about honest and brave cop Durai Singam played by Suriya, working in Nallur Police station. In the same area, he has his home and lives with his parents, where his family does their family business. Singam and his family are respected everyone in their village. Everything was okay until one-day Singam encounters Mayil Vaaganam a Chennai based gangster, played by Prakash Raj. Where Mayil Vaaganam was insulted in Nallur. In vengeance, Mayil Vaganam makes Singam’s transfer to Chennai, with help of his political contacts. And in Chennai, he tries insults Singam. And there begin clashes between these two prominent characters, and this clash continues till the end of the movie. On the way, we see ups and downs of both characters. Every artist has passionately worked for this movie and ended up with a brilliant presentation on the screen. This film became a career milestone for Suriya as he entered an era of commercial movies. The film was commercially successful and considered as a big blockbuster. The film’s success led to a number of remakes, like in Kannada as Kempe Gowda,  in Hindi as Singham, and in Bengali as Shotru. The sequels, Singam II and Singam III, released 2013 and 2017, are also commercially successful. Singam and its sequel are the Leading highest-grossing film franchise in Tamil cinema.

 

7. Aaytha Ezhuthu

Aaytha Ezuthu translated in English as Three dots, Released in 2004 is a political drama film written and directed by Mani Ratnam. And produced by Mani Ratnam’s home production banner of Madras Talkies. Along with Suriya this movie stars, Madhavan, Siddharth, Meera Jasmine, Trisha Krishnan, Bharathiraja and Esha Deol in the prime roles. The movie speaks about three different personalities and their daily livelihood, finally connecting all three leads together in a political scenario. These are, first is, Inba Sekar played by Madhavan, a goon who loves and lives with his wife Sashi played by Meera Jasmine. Second is Michael Vasanth portrayed by Suriya is an influential student leader who wants politicians like Selvanayagam played by Bharathiraja to be away from college elections. Michael loves his neighbor Geetha played by Esha Deol, who lives with her uncle and aunt. And the third is Arjun Balakrishnan played by Siddharth, is the carefree and spoiled son of an IAS officer. He wants to move to the U.S. for a better future. He loves Meera played by Trisha Krishnan, whom he just met. Following the course of the storyline one day someone was about to shoot Micheal, who is saved by Arjun, and this way the leads of the movie meets and following such situation surrounded by politics all three leads comes in single frame. Where at the end we see someone leading a good life while other is suffering from his evil deeds. A wonderful political drama presented by Mani Ratnam. A must watch the movie for the beautiful performances of the star cast. The movie’s music was composed by A. R. Rahman, while Ravi K. Chandran was the cinematographer. The film was simultaneously shot in Hindi as Yuva with a completely different cast except for Esha Deol. The movie was a big hit and was highly acclaimed by critics.

 

8. Sillunu Oru Kaadhal

Sillunu Oru Kaadhal translated into English as A Breezy Love Story. Released in 2006 is a romance film written and directed by N. Krishna. With Suriya as the centrical character it stars Jyothika and Bhumika Chawla in pivotal roles, other actors like Shriya Sharma, Sukanya, Vadivelu and Santhanam played supporting roles. The movie is about an ideal husband and Father, Gautham played by Suriya, married to Kundavi played by Jyothika. In the beginning, we see a pleasing person who is happy with his small family of wife and daughter. As the movie proceeds and situations come when Gautham is made to remember about his college days. He remembers his college love interest Ishwarya played by Bhoomika Chawla, whom he used to love a lot but because of some reasons, they both didn’t end up together. But as the movie goes ahead we see Ishwarya again in the life of Gautham, where Gautham stands confused and tensed. Watch this movie to feel the life of a person surviving in two different phases. The film’s music was composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by popular Indian poet Vaali. Upon release, the movie was highly appreciated by Audiences and Critics and it became one of the best movies of Suriya. The film was later dubbed into Telugu as Nuvvu Nenu Prema. Again, In 2015, this film was remade into Marathi as Tu Hi Re, starring Swapnil Joshi, Sai Tamhankar, Tejaswini Pandit and directed by Sanjay Jadhav.

 

9. Pithamagan

Pithamagan translated into English as Son of Ancestors. Released in 2003 is a crime drama film written and directed by Bala. The movie stars Vikram, Suriya, Laila and Sangeetha in lead roles. Produced by V. A. Durai. The film is based on Jayakanthan’s Nandhavanathil Oru Andi, the story of an undertaker. The movie speaks about two prime characters one is Chitan, played by Chiyan Vikram who grows up in a graveyard, and was nourished by the caretaker of the graveyard. Chitan has no social contact and lives like an animal. One day, He moves into a town in search of food and gets into trouble. He is rescued by Gomathi played by Sangeetha, a petty ganja seller. She finds Chitan will be very loyal and enrolls him as her employer, a large scale ganja producer. Once, Chitan is caught during a drug raid and sent to jail. On the other hand, the other prime character is Shakthi played by Suriya is a conman. He gets into trouble when he cons Manju played by Laila. Shakthi was sent to jail and there he meets Chithan. And after they meet and talks Shakthi develops a sympathy towards Chithan, as he treated like dogs because of his loyalty. And as the movie comes to end across we come through a lot of crime, tragedy and few scenes of romance. A movie that depicts the evil of society is perfectly described on screen. The movie ’s cinematography is done by Balasubramaniem, lyrics are composed by Vaali, Pazhani Bharathi, and Na. Muthukumar. The film’s music was composed by legendary Ilayaraaja. After release, the film was critically acclaimed and appreciated by everyone. Vikram won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance as Chithan. The movie was considered as a big hit. Later, the film was dubbed into Telugu as Sivaputrudu and was also remade in Kannada as Anatharu (2007) with Upendra and Darshan lead roles.

10. Vaaranam Aayiram

Vaaranam Aayiram translated into English as “Live a Thousand Years”. The movie was released in 2008 and this dramatic film was written and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. With Suriya, this movie stars with Simran, Divya Spandana and Sameera Reddy in pivotal roles. Suriya portrays dual roles, where we see one as aged intellect personality and other as a young and heartbroken person who is dealing with situations happening with him. It can be mentioned as one of the best presentations of Gautham Vasudev Menon. Prior to this movie, Suriya did a number of commercially average movies, but after the blockbuster hit of Vaarnam Aayiram, Suriya became the most promising stars of South and appreciated a lot by masses for his pleasing performance. The film showcases how a father becomes hero and inspiration to his son, and whose demise at the end makes his son stand strong in any situation that crosses life. The movie presents the relationship between a father and son, where the father and son help each other through all the phases of growing up, romance, tragedy, and adventure. The film was produced by Venu Ravichandran and has musical score by Harris Jayaraj. It is also found that Vaarnam Aayiram was a tribute by the director in memory of his father. The movie won many awards that include the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. The film was a commercial success, and it became the biggest hit of Suriya at that period. Suriya was awarded the award of Filmfare Best Actor South and Simran who acted as mother and wife of Surya in the movie was awarded as Filmfare Best Actress. With all that this movie made Suriya one of the prominent Actors of Tamil Industry. After that, Till today he is entertaining us with unique and peculiar subjects that audiences love a lot, we wish Suriya will present more and more unique performances ahead and we will love him always.
