Every year India makes number of movies, varied from all genre. But there is one genre which is loved most by the viewers, because it gives everyone, shock and goosebumps. The genre is “Suspense Thriller”, this is a genre that entertains us in different way, playing with our mind throughout the movie. 1. Ugly

Ugly, released in 2014. It is a crime thriller film written, co-produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap. Under the banner of Phantom Films and DAR Motion Pictures. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Rahul Bhat, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Vineet Kumar Singh, Girish Kulkarni, Ronit Roy, Surveen Chawla and Anshika Shrivastava in important roles. The story of the movie revolves around a struggling actor whose daughter mystically disappears. He reports police about his lost child. And as police investigates the case number of things comes out that no viewer would have expected. This movie is made completely relating with the human nature. We see betrayal, drama, crime, taking advantage of a situation and lot more in the movie. It will keep you asking one question till the end of the movie, that what happened with the girl who disappeared, and unveils the mystery with a gentle touch that will make every viewer shocked. Upon release, the film received critical acclaim and was a commercially successful.


2. Mera Saaya

Mera Saaya, its another Musical suspense thriller movie released in 1966.  It is directed by Raj Khosla. And it is produced by Premji. The film was an inspiration of Marathi blockbuster movie “Pathlaag”, and Tamil Superhit “Idhaya Kamalam”. The film stars Sunil Dutt and Sadhana in lead roles. The film’s story is about a man who returns from London when he hears about his wife’s illness, eventually, his wife dies. He is now living with his wife’s memories and one uncertain day he comes to know that there is another woman who looks exactly like his dead wife, and claims that she is his original wife. Now, there’s lots of confusion and drama. With lots of thrill and suspense, this story unveils lots of incidents that the viewers have never predicted. It’s another must watch thriller on the list. It became a box office success. The performances, direction and the music of the movie are brilliant. It won the Filmfare Best Sound Award for Manohar Amberkar. This movie includes superhit and popular songs like “Jhumka Gira Re”, “Naino Mein Badara Chhaye” and “Tu Jahan Jahan Chalega”


3. Kaun?

Kaun?, Released in 1999. It is a psychological thriller film directed by Ram Gopal Verma. The movie was produced by Mukesh Udeshi and written by Anurag Kashyap. The movie stars Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee and Sushant Singh in pivotal roles. The story of the movie focuses on a woman in her house, she is disturbed when she watches a news about a serial killer in the city, and suddenly her doorbell rings. The suspense begins here and it continues until the end of the movie. With lots of turns and thrilling suspense’s, it takes a long time to unveil who is the serial killer in the movie. Watch this movie now to experience the classic psychological thriller. The movie performed average in the box-office, but it became a hit among masses in the genre of thriller-horror. 4. Jewel Thief

Jewel Thief, Released in 1967 is a spy thriller musical drama directed by Vijay Anand. And the movie was produced by Dev Anand under his home banner Navketan films. The film stars Dev Anand, Vyjayantimala, Tanuja and Ashok Kumar in the lead roles. The story of a son of a police commissioner who often becomes the victim and prime suspect, because of his look-alike who is a Jewel Thief. The entire plotline is developed with a simple concept of confusion between duplicates. But the presentation of the movie is unique and classic that until the end it will be hard for you to identify the twist. its thrilling music is one thing that will always keep you waited for the next. A movie which became one the first movies to portray duplicates was a massive hit of that period and became an inspiration to several national and international filmmakers who recreated twist in their movies. Dev Anand and Vjyayanthimala’s performance is wonderful. The film was appreciated by viewers and critics and it bagged the award for Filmfare Best Sound Award to JM Barot, whose music made the movie full of thrill.


5. Teesri Manzil

Teesri Manzil, Released in1966. It is a musical thriller film directed by Vijay Anand and produced by Nasir Hussain. It features an ensemble cast including Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Laxmi Chhaya, Premnath, Prem Chopra, Iftekhar, Helen, K. N. Singh and Salim Khan in important roles. The movie revolves around A woman, who is leads a disturbed life, after her sister’s suicide. She blames a drummer for the death of her sister and wants revenge. The drummer meets the lady disguising himself as another person and starts investigating for her sister’s death. There is a lot of twists and turns in the movie, that will keep you engaged with it. The plot, characterization and brilliant screenplay are fabulous. It’s a must watch a movie. Indiatimes mentioned this movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. The film became successful at box office. With the epic plotline and stellar performances of the actor, RD Burman’s thrilling music in the movie was also appreciated a lot.


6. A Wednesday

A Wednesday!, released in 2008. It is a suspense thriller film written and directed by Neeraj Pandey. It stars Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill, Deepal Shaw and Aamir Bashir in pivotal roles. The story is about a certain Wednesday when around 2 PM the police commissioner of the city gets a call from an unknown person mentioning that he has planted 4 bombs In different places of the city and he will blast it all if his demands are not fulfilled. Beginning with this call the movie follows a number of events that make every viewer thrilled and at the end an ultimate twist that shocks everyone apart. The film was made at a small budget of just 50 Million USD but became one of the most successful Indian movies of all time. It was commercial hit as well as it bagged numerous National and International Awards. An amazing plotline, screenplay, performances, and direction by director made this movie an epic movie of the era. Neeraj Pandey who was making debut as Director with this movie was awarded prestigious Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the 56th National Film Awards. This movie has later inspired a number of national and international moviemakers to remake this movie. This includes Tamil movie Unnaipol Oruvan, Telugu movie Eeenadu and Hollywood movie A Common Man.


7. Manorama Six Feet Under

Manorama Six Feet Under, released in 2007, this Mystery-suspense-thriller film was directed and co-written by Navdeep Singh and produced by Ketan Maroo. The film features Abhay Deol, Raima Sen, Khulbushan Kharbanda, Sarika and Gul Panag in the prime roles. The movie revolves around a Junior engineer who is also part-time detective novel writer from Rajasthan. On a day a lady arrives at his home and appreciates him about his last novel ‘Manorama’, she also addresses herself as ‘Manorama’ same as the name of the book written by the writer and asks him to investigate over her husband’s affair. And there’s a detective journey begins, on the search of an affair the detective finds a number of societal flaws that is linked with influential people of the society. This is an ultimate gem in Indian Cinema, the amazing plot, brilliant direction, uncertain twists and turns and above all amazing performances by the stars, made this movie a classic.


8. Madhumati

Madhumati, this classic paranormal romance film was released in 1958, and it was produced and directed by the legend Bimal Roy. The film stars Dilip Kumar, Vyjayantimala, Pran, and Johnywalker in prime roles. Madhumati is a story revolving around Anand, a high profile urban man. One rainy night, His car breaks down, and he asks for shelter in a nearby house. He is allowed to let in the house by the servant and permits him to stay until the rain stops. The thrill begins here when he finds out about his previous birth, his love, Madhumati. And rest is a wonderful story that encompasses romance, drama, and tragedy. Watch this movie for its engaging suspense. Upon release, It was a commercial success, It is considered as one of the most commercially successful and influential Indian films of all time. Madhumati is said as one of the earliest films whose prime subject was based on reincarnation. After the success of this movie, many regional and international filmmakers were inspired and made films on the subject of reincarnation. It won nine Filmfare Awards, which includes Best Film, Best Director, Best Music Director, Best Female Playback Singer and many more. It became the first film to bag 9 prime Filmfare awards at that period. It also bagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.


9. Kahaani

Released in 2012, Kahaani is a mystery thriller film directed by Sujoy Ghosh. It is produced by Sujoy Ghosh and K Kantilal Gada under the banner of Boundscript motion pictures. It stars Vidya Balan, Parambrata Chatterjee, Indranil Sengupta and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in pivotal roles. The movie revolves around A pregnant woman, named Bidya Bagchi, portrayed by Vidya Balan. Who comes from London to Kolkata to search for her missing husband. In the search she is supported by a local cop, and while in the journey of search they unveil number mysteries surrounded with the national security agency. The movie is made with genuine intelligence, that it will keep you at the edge of your seats with utmost thrill. Till you find out the real mystery. Kahaani was a big blockbuster of 2012. Made with just a budget of 8 Crores, it did a great business of around 120 Crore worldwide. The film bagged several awards, including three National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards, which includes Best Actress Filmfare to Vidya Balan and Best Director Filmfare to Sujoy Ghosh.

The movie revolves around Vijay Salgaonkar played by Ajay Devgan, who takes Desperate measures to save his family from Police, law, and order after they commit an unexpected crime. Until the end, you will be made to think “what’s next ?”. By few critics, The movie is also considered as better than its original. And it is remarked as the best Suspense thriller movie in Indian cinema history. Made with just a budget of 6.5 Crore the movie collected a net of 120 Crore worldwide in its theatrical run and is considered as a blockbuster.
