Just a couple of years after the Release of First Indian Sound Film “Alam Ara” in 1931. There begin the depiction of stories in the screen in Assam. Since the first Assamese movie “Joymoti” in 1935, Assam has given numerous movies that touched millions of hearts across the nation. Few of these beautiful films are Dr. Bezbarua (1969), Aparoopa (1982), Hiya Diya Niya (2000), Chameli Memsaheb (1986) and many more. There are number of Actors that have done a lot for the growth of Assamese cinema.Today here in SobiGhor we will discuss 10 famous actors/actresses of Assam.

1. Tapan Das

Tapan Das is a prominent actor, director and story writer in Assamese cinema and Assamese theatre. He was born on 11 January 1962. Das made his debut in Assamese cinema from Sendoor (1984) directed by Pulak Gogoi. So far he has acted in more than 20 Superhit Assamese films, that includes Shakuntal Shankar Joseph Ali (1984), Kanyadaan (2002), Raamdhenu (2011) and Ahetuk (2015). Apart from films, He is also popular with his poems and theatre groups. He has acted for Kohinoor, Bordoisila and Shakuntala Theatre. His poem “Oi Suwali ebar Bhal pai Sabi” is most popular among teenagers. Through this, we can know how talented he is in delivering dialogues and portraying prime roles in his movies. He is a legend in Assamese CInema. His portrayal as an antagonist in the 2001 Daag is remembered as the best movie of any actor in negative role in Assamese cinema.

2. Kapil Bora

A Personality with a smiling face. Kapil Bora was born on 30 March in Guwahati, Assam. He is an Assamese Actor, Anchor, and All India Radio voice Artist. He debuted with Assamese film Gun Gun Gane Gane directed by Bidyut Chakrabarty in 2002. And after that, he starred in numerous hit films and music videos. His talent in portraying effective roles has made him popular across the state and nation. Some of his best performances are like Mon(2002), Ahir Bhairav (2007), Jetuka Pator Dore (2012) and Dwaar (2013). He is also part of popular Assamese Theater groups like Ashirbad and Rajmahal Theater. His movies Dwaar and Jetuka Pator Dore were appreciated a lot by critics and viewers and bagged special jury National Awards.

3. Chetana Das

if ever a 90s kid of Assam wants to laugh like anything he/she will look for perfect comic timings in local slang. and that makes every Assamese guy remember this lady Chetana Das. Chetana Das was born on 4 November 1954 in Shillong and is the one of the most famous actresses in Assamese Film Industry. She is popular for her perfect comic timings that will make you laugh at the instant. She began her career with the drama film “Sunit Konwari” written by Legendary Jyoti Prasad Agarwala. Chetana Das is the first actress from Assam to act in a Hindi serial “Kamrup Ki Kahani”.
she has also bagged the Dr. Ambedkar award for her outstanding service in the field of Assamese culture. She acted in number films that include superhits like Banaria Phul (1973), Abhijan (1973), Indira (1980), Ajoli Nabou (1980), Papori (1986), Hiya Diya Niya (2000), Suren Suror Putek (2005).

4. Prastuti Parashar

Prastuti Parashar was born on 15 December 1980. She is considered as one of the most popular and successful actresses of Assamese cinema. She has acted in numerous movies as well as Stage shows. Prastuti Parashar was born at Malow Ali in Jorhat, Assam. Her father Bijoy Chandra Sarma was the former principal of Jagannath Barooah College. She started acting career since the age of 5 years from a serial named Barnali in Doordarshan Guwahati. Her debut Assamese film was Bani Das’s Maharathi, released in 1999. Some of her most popular movies are Tumi Mur mathu Mur (2000), Barood (2004), Dinbandhu (2004), Suren Suror Pitek (2005), RaamDhenu (2011) and Ahetuk (2015).Her movie Ramdhenu is considered as the biggest hit of Modern Assamese cinema. And this movie which has the centrical lead as Prastuti Parashar was appreciated a lot by regional viewers as well as national viewers.

5. Barsha Rani Bishaya

She is an actress who is complete from all side, let it be acting she is best, let it be dance she is wonderful. she is a gift to Assamese cinema. and how talented she is she has proved herself since her debut “Joubane Amoni Kore” produced and Directed by her father AK Baishya. Barsha Rani Bishaya was born on 20 September 1983 in Guwahati, Assam. She also a prime part of the number of theater groups of Assam that includes Kohinoor, hengul,  Abahan and Many more. with acting, she is also a prominent Bihu Dancer in Assam and that can be seen from her performances in a number of films. Some of the most popular films where she acted are Bukur Majot Jowle (1999), Jon Jwale Kopalat (2000), Jumon Sumon (2003), Senai Mur Dhhulia (2005), Basundhara (2010) and Bidhata (2003), Her movie Basundhara (2010) bagged National Award for Best Regional CInema 2011.

6. Adil Hussain

Hands up if you have seen “Jasoos Vijay” a Popular DD national TV show of early 2000. The lead of the national TV show is an Assam born Actor Adil Hussain. Adil was born on 5 October 1963 and brought up in Goalpara, Assam. Hussain is a talented actor and has acted in numerous languages that include English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam and French movies. Adil Began his career as a stand-up comedian and stage actor in his college days from B Baruah College, Guwahati. and then he continued his acting education from National School of Drama till 1993 and also he pursued a year of acting in Drama studio London. and after return to India, he struggled for a couple of years. He got minor roles in Bollywood movies. his Big breakthrough was the DD National Aid Awareness cum Detective Show Jasoos Vijay. After the hit of the show, he was offered numerous projects and he suited himself in all characters he acted. He is said as the most versatile actor currently in Indian cinema, he can portray any role from a cunning villain in Ishqiya to Adorable son in Mukti Bhawan. He has also a lead role movie under his name “Zed Plus ” (2014) and which was lot appreciated by critics and viewers. His most notable works for Assamese cinema are like Rodor Sithi (2014), Sutrapaat, Pita Putra, Bhai Bhai, Kothanodi (2016) and Maj ratir keteki (2017). Adil has also worked in the International Films like The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012) and Life of Pi (2012) and he bagged the Special Jury Award at the 2017 National Film Awards.

7. Jamuna Baruah

The wife of Legendary PC Baruah, Jamuna Baruah was born on Oct 10, 1919 and was a leading actress in Assamese Film Industry. Whenever we think about Paro from Devdas we remember about Madhuri Dixit for her dedicated role in 2003 Devdas. But do you know this famous character Paro was first presented in the screen by legendary Jamuna Baruah. She was an example of a talented actress at that era she did movies in all popular industries, with Assamese she also worked in Bengali films as well as Hindi films and she gave a number of hits. She has given as many gems like  Rani (1943), Devdas (1935-36), Adhikar (1939), Maya (1936), Roop Lekha (1934). Although after the death of her husband she ceased Acting. Assamese cinema will always remember this Talented Actress.

8. Jatin Bora

An Actor who is known for his evergreen versatility, an actor over whom the viewers believe that this guy can portray any role perfectly. Let it be happy go lucky brother from “Daag”, The leader and a secret lover from ‘Adhinayak’ and to a Humble goon in “Bohnimaan”. Jatin Bora is versatile and evergreen in Assamese cinema. He is often called as Superstar of Assamese cinema. Jatin Bora was born on April 25, 1970, in Kacholukhowa village, Nagaon, Assam. He began his career in Assamese Films since 1989. He is a talented actor and also a director in several theatre groups of Assam including Aabahan, Hengul, Ashirbaad, Bhagyadevi, Kohinoor, and Itihas. Jatin Bora’s first Featured movie was Utarrkaal (1989) and this movie was a big hit and Jatin became a star of the Assamese Cinema. There was a time in Assam in early 2000’s when cinema theatres were in progressing stage in Assam, ever a Jatin Bora movie is screened it would definitely be housefull. Jatin Bora has a huge range of fans across the state.  If I have to list his hit films there are plenty. here are few most popular works of Jatin Bora like Kaal Sandhya (1991), Hiya Diya Niya (2000), Sesh Upahar (2001), Daag (2001), Nayak (2001), Kanyadan (2002) and Adhinayak (2006).

9. Pramathesh Chandra Barua

Pramatesh Chandra Barua aka PC Barua was born on 24 October 1903, in Gauripur, Assam. He was most famous Actor, screenwriter and Director in the Assamese Film Industry at that period of time when the nation was under the governance of British. Pramathesh Barua started his film career in 1926 as a member of British Dominion Films. PC Barua is said as talented artist discovered in Shantiniketan by Dhirendranath Ganguly, a director who was prominent in those days. And the duo did a number of hit films and theatres together, this includes the popular “Takay Ki Na Hoi”. Some of the Notable works of PC Baruah are Devdas (Assamese), Mukti (1937), Rajat Jayanti (1939), Adhikar (1938). and in 1940 he also turned as a cinematographer with the Hindi Movie “Zindagi”.  PC Baruah has a great role in the development of the Assamese Cinema. He worked for Upliftment of Assamese cinema until he passed away on 1951. Assamese Cinema will always remember this legend.

10. Nipon Goswami

Considered as the first superstar of Assamese Cinema, Nipon Goswami is the most popular Assamese film actor and theatre artist of All times. He is one of the most prime veteran actors of Assamese cinema. Nipon Goswami began his career as a stage actor and later established himself as a prime actor. Nipon Goswami was born in September 1947 at Kolibari in Tezpur, Assam. His father Chandradhar Goswami was also a famous actor and his mother Nirupama Goswami was a popular singer. He pursued his acting courses at Pune Film Institute. The popular movie personalities like Subhash Ghai, Navin Nischol, Shatrughan Sinha were his classmates. He debuted in the Assamese Cinema as a child artist in the movie Piyali Phukan (1957), directed by Phani Sarma.  And as a lead actor, Sangram (1968) was his first movie and which was a big hit, and this movie is considered as the movie that made Nipon Goswami as the Next big Star of Assamese Cinema. His next movie Dr. Bezbaruah (1969) brought him recognition as a star that is super talented and can portray any given role. Dr. Bezbaruah is considered as one of the best movies of Assamese Cinema till date.   He has also appeared in few TV serials like “Writu aahe writu jaai’.  Some of the notable works of Nipon Goswami are like Dr. Bezbarua (1969), Sandhya raag (1977), Aparoopa (1982), Shakuntala aru Shankar Joseph Ali (1984), Siraj (1988), Hiya Diya Niya (2000) ,Antaheen Jatra (2004), Jilmil Jonak (2014 )and Many more. He is still active in Assamese cinema playing prime supporting roles and we hope he will entertain us more and more.
